With all this snowfall and more on the way it’s easy to get excited for winter activities, and one of the most popular ways to spend time outdoors in Maine is Ice Fishing. We’ve heard rumors of lakes freezing over (or buttoning up) all over the state however it’s important to remember ice safety, especially when you’re eager to drill your first fishing hole.
The Maine Warden Service has many safety guidelines available online at:
Including these General Ice Thickness Guidelines:
- 2″ or less – STAY OFF
- 4″ May allow Ice fishing or other activities on foot
- 5″ often allows for Snowmobile or ATV travel
- 8″ – 12″ of good ice will support most Cars or small pickups
- 12″ – 15″ will likely hold a Medium sized truck.
