Statewide winter fun set for this weekend
Looking for a way to beat the winter blues and get some fresh air? The Great Maine Outdoor Weekend is bringing fun, family-friendly events across the state Friday to Sunday.
The Great Maine Outdoor Weekend, a project of the Maine Outdoor Coalition, began in 2012 to bring events statewide.
“We’re really pleased with the event submissions this year,” said event planner Nick Callanan of No Umbrella Media in a press release. “Our event organizers are ready to go no matter what the weather conditions, and many of our events include free equipment rentals. ”
Locally, the Saco Valley Land Trust is hosting a guided walk of the Middle Goosefare Trail in conjunction with Saco Bay Trails 1-2 p.m. Saturday. Parking will be at the Big Apple gas station, 42 Portland Road.
The amount of snow will dictate whether it will be a hike or snowshoe trek. The trail is easy, and the walk will be moderate in pace. Participants are asked to bring equipment, as none will be provided.
Other local events include Biddeford WinterFest and Winter Carnival at Rotary Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Activities include snow golf, sledding and a snow softball tournament.
Also in Biddeford, a 90- minute twilight walk on the Eastern Trail will take place 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, beginning in the rear parking lot of Southern Maine Health Care. Depending on trail and weather conditions, participants will snowshoe or cross-country ski in the direction of the Arundel town line at a leisurely pace, with stops to point out local features. Flashlights and pets are not allowed.
Hobbs Farm on Fox Ridge Road in Acton is hosting family-friendly activities on 1-3 p.m. Saturday, including snow shoeing and a game of capture the flag, with a bonfire for warming up.
The TREE center at Bauneg Beg Lake in Sanford will host ice fishing, ice skating, snow shoeing and other activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Mount Agamenticus will feature a story walk all weekend.
