The best of Maine- enjoy fall fun with the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend
Celebrate another year of the GMOW, September 30th-October 1st, 2017
Maine, Statewide- Thousands of Mainers are expected to participate in the Maine Outdoor Coalition’s twelfth Great Maine Outdoor Weekend and attend events all over the state to celebrate autumn.
“The weekend is a huge effort to get as many Mainers outside and connected to the great outdoors as possible” says Kaitlyn Bernard of the Appalachian Mountain Club, one of the members of the planning team. Since 2012, the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend (GMOW) has held over 1,000 events across the state and reached more than 75,000 participants during the biannual celebrations in September and February.
The events this fall cover a large portion of the state and include a sunset kayak tour on Portland’s Eastern Promenade, rock climbing in Acadia National park, mushroom identification walks in Penobscot and Rockport, and a guided mountain bike tour in Bethel. “The Great Maine Outdoor Weekend is a really great opportunity to try out a new activity or visit a corner of the state you have never been to,” says Donna Bissett of Maine Coast Heritage Trust. “It is a wonderful time to experience Maine’s best recreational resources.” Many of the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend events include free equipment rental and lessons, and nearly all the events are family friendly.
With over 60 events planned so far, and more to come, this weekend will be a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy Maine’s beautiful fall foliage. “We’re really pleased with the event submissions this year,” says Nick Callanan of No Umbrella Media, “with fall-themed events including apple and foliage festivals, hikes all over Maine, and amazing nature watching activities, this will surely be a fall weekend to remember.”
