Friday, February 3rd, 2017- With snow on the ground and blue sky above, energetic middle school students in Deer Isle ventured out to “their” school nature trail. During the fall they headed out almost daily to take scientific measurements, but today they were making the trail more accessible, thanks to a Great Maine Outdoors Weekend grant.
Students carried their boards into the wet woods to create bridging that will keep their feet from getting wet. Today it was mostly ice, but we know that both our feet and the wetland plants on the trail will be better off come spring. Proud students are already telling others to come out and see the improvements!
You could hear students comment :
“winter is so pretty”………”this is my favorite season “……. ” I love getting outside and active” …..learning outside is the best”……………” this will make if easier for the little kids to come out”
We wrapped up the day with boards in place, students laughing and a bald eagle flying above. What a wonderful Great Maine Outdoor Weekend!
