15 High School students from Old Town, Orono, & Bangor joined the Acadia Mountain Guides for a day of free guided rock climbing to celebrate their passion for recreating outdoors during the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend. Crisp temperatures welcomed the climbers and guides at the climber-owned Eagle Bluff in Clifton, ME. Upon being outfitted with helmets, harnesses, and climbing shoes everyone made the short hike to the sunny climbing site. After a thorough lesson and demonstration on belaying, rappelling, and climbing techniques the group split into two: climbers & rappelers. While one group hiked to the summit to rappel the climbers tried out the newly acquired belaying and climbing skills under the supervision of the certified climbing guides. On the top of the bluff the crew was greeted with magnificent views of the nearby Cedar Swamp Pond as well as the summits in Acadia National Park. There was enough time in the 4 hour session for everyone in the group to climb many different rock climbs, and for everyone who wanted to try the vertical to free hanging rappel. Smiles, laughs and high-fives were shared by everyone!
Later in the day Acadia Mountain Guides met MDI Conners Emerson Middle School students for an afternoon on the sea cliffs in Acadia National Park. After issuing the climbing gear, the guides taught each of the climbers and chaperones knots and techniques necessary to safely belay and rock climb. The mountainous terrain and wonderful climate in Acadia make it a great location to try rock climbing for the first time, or to hone climbing skills. The beautiful pink granite fractures in a way that provides a variety of routes offering challenges for the beginner as well as the expert climber and attracts climbers from all over the world to enjoy these cliffs. The students paid close attention during the lessons and were naturally great climbers! The guides at AMG are great at incorporating adventure into the outdoors, are trained educators, patient teachers, and are just plain fun to explore the sea cliff environment with. Acadia Mountain Guides is accredited by the American Mountain Guides Association and the Professional Climbing Instructors Association and is Maine’s premier year round guide service. For fifteen years they have offered summer climbing and adventure camps for 9-17 year olds.
