With scattered snow showers across the state today, winter is certainly on our minds! Rumor has it that XC ski trails are opening (Sugarloaf Outdoor Center, Quarry Road Recreation Area in Waterville, 10th Mountain Ski Club in Fort Kent…) but there are plenty of adventures to be had with or without snow!

Saturday, Dec. 14 – Intro to Winter Outings Workshop, Brunswick
Join the Maine Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club on Saturday, December 14th at the Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick for a crash course in winter adventures from experienced winter trip leaders Peter Roderick and Laura Flight. They’ll give you the rundown on clothing, gear, snow travel, and taking care of yourself in the winter. Learn to stay warm, dry, and functional. This workshop designed to prepare experienced three-season trampers, and experienced winter trampers who’d like to learn a few tricks.
After the morning indoor session, there will be a pot-luck lunch and an optional outdoor afternoon session. Check the calendar listing for registration information.
Saturday, Dec. 14 – Opening Day at Mt. Abram
Missed the REALLY early openings of the bigger mountains but still want to have a taste of opening day bragging rights? Check out Mt. Abram in Greenwood on Saturday – with lift tickets ringing in at only $25!
Saturday, Dec. 21 – The Night Tree: A Solstice Celebration with Maine Audubon, Bangor
Join Maine Audubon at their Fields Pond facility on the longest night of the year for a celebration of nature in winter. They will recreate Eve Bunting’s classic story, The Night Tree, by making their own “night tree” to share with their wild neighbors. They will have hot cider and indoor activities. All ages welcome, $5/family.
